National Newspaper Week 2023: October 1 to 7, 2023
Newspaper journalism—both local and national—is critically important, especially in the reality in which we live.
National Newspaper Week is an annual opportunity to recognize the role that newspapers and their sites play in providing Canadians with credible, factual news and spotlight why news media continues to be a trusted source of information that is critical to our democracy.
National Newspaper Week 2023 celebrated the work of people behind the news, who inform, champion and challenge our society by providing diverse, local, original content that cannot be found anywhere else. In 2023, News Media Canada launched a bilingual illustrated book entitled Champions, honouring notable people from the Canadian news media industry. Champions is available to purchase in hardcover format, view for free as an e-book below or download in pdf format below. Click here to download the complete list of champions of the truth.
Champions features the inspirational stories of notable people from the Canadian news media industry who have championed the truth in their own right.
This relatable, easy-to-read and bilingual publication includes custom illustrations by Canadian artist Rachel Joanis.
The champions featured in the book are an integral part of what keeps our democracy thriving through vibrant, independent and local news media. We celebrate these individuals for their tremendous contributions to the industry, their communities and Canada at large.
To further champion the power of words and increase literacy among Canadian children, all proceeds from the sale of Champions will be donated to First Book Canada.
First Book Canada is a Canadian charity that provides books and educational resources to hundreds of thousands of children throughout the country each year.

Local newspapers deliver vital information to Canadians every day, connecting local communities across the country. In fact, four in five people in Canada (81%) read newspapers each week - either in print or digital format. [Newspapers 24/7: 2024]
National Newspaper Week is a chance to reflect on the essential service newspapers provide with diverse, local, original content that cannot be found anywhere else.
To celebrate National Newspaper Week, News Media Canada also created a custom font entitled, “Champions”, available for free download. Designed with both print and digital platforms in mind, the Champions font honours newspapers' history while looking forward to a bright and multi-platformed future.
Champions is a geo-humanist font that incorporates both humanistic traits — which mimic hand motions reflecting the craft and artistry that goes into producing credible news each day — and highly geometric shapes — which represent the structure and rigour of fact-checking, editing, and producing high-quality credible content newspapers are known for.
Inspired by the essential service that newspapers provide, the Champions font highlights the power of words, and the people behind the press, who use them to communicate essential information to Canadians each and every day. These champions of the truth keep our democracy thriving through a vibrant and independent news media.
